FLOREN, GIBBONS HAIL FUNDING OF SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM

by: jdooley Monday, June 22nd, 2009

HARTFORD – State Representatives Livvy Floren (R-149) and Lile Gibbons (R-150) today hailed the passage of legislation appropriating more than $11 million to the state Department of Labor for a summer youth employment program to be funded through the federal stimulus package.

The Summer Youth Employment program is funded through the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, but legislative action was needed to make the appropriation to the state Department of Labor.

“This is a program that can provide jobs for 4,500 young people between the ages of 14 and 24 from across Connecticut,” Rep. Floren said, “These funds are an important way to see that more young persons have greater opportunity to develop the skills they need to be successful in the labor market.”

Rep. Gibbons added, “Summer jobs are as important for the young adults as for their parents who are thrilled to have them gainfully employed and productive! Thanks to the stimulus package we have a chance to give hundreds of young people an opportunity to spend their summer earning a paycheck.”

The Department of Labor has already been working with the state’s five Workforce Investment Boards to identify eligible youths. With today’s funding the program can begin just as the school year ends.
